In Shaoxing's old streets, the courtyard house where Lu Xun — modern China's most influential writer — was born in 1881 anchors a memorial quarter of his childhood world: the Baicao Garden he played in, the Sanwei Study where he schooled, and next door, Shen Garden, the Song-dynasty garden of the tragic love story behind his famous poem.
